This week is surely shaping up to be very bad for sports fans. With the beginning of the week showing hope of an NFL settlement soon, the end of the week has show differently. Rumor has it the talks are starting to faulter. If this is true, preseason is in jeopardy and an abbreviated regular season would be that much closer to possibility. Considering the popularity of the NFL, that could be a tremendous blow to revenue.
In other news, the NBA is heading down the same path. Owners want more, players want more, and there is only so much to go around. The difference here is the product. The NBA has never recovered from the lockout many years ago. There is also the public perception of the of the league. Ask most casual fans about basketball and the first person the can mention is James. The next sentence is on "The Decision" press conference and how that was the most arrogant thing they heard of. The NBA player is viewed as young, brash, and immature. Kind of hard to feel sympathy for a group labeled as such.
With both leagues looking at potential of no season, the one sport that would be left in the fall would be hockey. I'm from Boston and this has always been a hockey town. Granted, more so now with the Cup here. With no other sport to cover, this would be a golden opportunity for the NHL to showcase itself. I would love to see rocky regain some of the glory it had back in the 70's and 80's. When even the most casual fan could name players like Gretzky, Lemieux, Neely, Bourque, and Izerman.
